Full Description

Early on a Saturday morning this four masted Norwegian ship went ashore on the S Goodwins and was wrecked. The captain and crew were rescued by the Walmer and Kingsdown lifeboats. She carried a cargo of 3,000 tons of dye wood, had passed Dover the previous day reporting `all's well', but in the night, the wind dropping suddenly and when near the E Goodwin light vessel, she drifted onto the sands. Shortly after a southerly gale got up and drove her even further ashore where she commenced to break up. She parted in the middle, her crew narrowly escaping the falling masts and yards. The Kingsdown lifeboat was launched and lay by till dawn. At 7am the Walmer lifeboat was launched and between them both boats saved 13 crew just as she broke up. The Walmer boat (CIVIL SERVICE NO.2) saved the captain and six men, the Kingsdown boat (SABRINA) a further six. The MERSEY was built as a steam ship in 1859, but converted to a barquentine.
