Full Description

Excavations undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in the St. James area of Dover revealed 29 graves in what appears to have been a small burial ground of the Quakers. The graveyard was established in 1660 and was in use until the early 19th century. Although much of the area had been destroyed by more recent activity, twenty-nine skeletons were carefully exposed and lifted during the excavations. The graves themselves had been cut into a sequence of earlier, medieval deposits, just as complicated as those seen in the other areas, and here included foundations relating to a substantial masonry building, which seems to have gone out of use well before the cemetery was established.Sealing the graves was a continuous layer of rammed chalk with a well-defined trodden surface, between 0.05 and 0.15m thick. This was covered by a very thin patchy layer of dark grey soil and coal dust, leaving little doubt that it was the floor of Mr Bussey’s coal store, recorded as subsequently being established across the cemetery site.
