During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in the St James area of Dover the former road surface of Arthurs Place was uncovered. Arthurs place is one of the 5 (now lost) streets which ran across the development area before the post war redevelopment of the town. It was located in two trenches (CAT WSD Central and North West) directly under the modern tarmac and consisted of four or five successive layers of grey gritty loam appeared to represent somewhat casual post-medieval road surfacing. Below these was a succession of well laid late Medieval road surfaces. Within the central excavation area (CAT-WSD Central) these were composed of rammed chalk rubble surfaced with compacted beach pebble and totalled about 0.75m in overall thickness. Seven separate early road surfaces were identified here, the earliest perhaps late 13th century in date. In the north western excavation (CAT-WSD NW) it was established that Arthurs place had occupied the same position for centuries being successively re-laid so that more than 2m of Medieval make up, with at least 8 rough metalled surfaces were recorded. These accumulated surfaces eventually came to form a positive embankment or causeway, flanked by Medieval and post medieval buildings, boundary walls, pits and yards. (1)
