Full Description
During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in the St James area of Dover, the former site of Russell Place was uncovered running north-east to south west. This road would have been packed with nineteenth century tall brick-built terrace dwellings. Golden Cross Passage served to link Russell Place and St James’s Street, which lay just beyond the excavation’s south-eastern limits. A brick built 19th century drain ran centrally down the road. Building remains of earlier post medieval and medieval buildings appear to respect the line of this road, suggesting that it has an early origin. (1)
