Full Description
During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at the former site of Russell Street Car Park in 2015, features representing at least nine separate buildings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries were identified. The features uncovered included, walls, floors, infilled cellars and yards. These building would have fronted Russell Place, St James’s Street and Dolphin Passage and give some indication of the density of the development in this part of Dover throughout the later post medieval period. Many of the walls exposed could be identified on large-scale nineteenth-century maps of the area (dated 1851 and 1861) though many have evidence of earlier phases of work. One of the infilled cellar’s, located on the northern side of Dolphin Lane, appeared to represent the remains of the nineteenth-century Golden Cross Public House which opened c.1860 and closed after bomb damage in 1940.
