Full Description

Summarised from report:

During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at the former site of Russell Street Car Park in 2015, a number of Medieval building remains were uncovered fronting what would have been St. James’s Street and Russell Place. Many of these medieval buildings appear to have been replaced by post medieval structures in either the same location or slightly offset, meaning that some of the Victorian buildings which were located here may have had a Medieval origin. The earliest structural remains identified during the excavation related to a small building located in the north-east corner of the excavated area. Its full plan was not recovered, but it perhaps dated to the thirteenth century. It was represented by a complex sequence of clay floors, occupation layers, stone and chalk built walls and beam slots. The earliest floors comprised a 0.40m thick laminated sequence of rammed chalk, clay and occupation material that contained fish bone, oyster shell and carbon inclusions. Pottery recovered from these deposits is provisionally dated to c. AD 1350–1450. As seen on other sites investigated in the area, many of the properties boundaries identified, although apparently long-lived, do not seem to readily conform with the elongated rectangular plots that typify the medieval burgage plots found in many historic towns.
