Full Description

During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in the St James area of Dover the footprint of a Medieval building which would have fronted onto the former site of St. James’s Street, was uncovered. The building was represented by substantial chalk rubble foundations. It had been set at an approximate right angle to another, slightly later medieval building with a cellar. (TR 34 SW 2145) with one wall of this cellared building being cut down the face of the pre-existing structure. Occupation in this area appears to have been long lived and it is possible that this building may date to the 13th or 14th century. (1)
