Full Description
During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in the St James area of Dover features including chalk floors relating to a series of medieval timber buildings were revealed within and beneath the cellars of the Victorian buildings fronting onto the former site of St. James’s Street. Many of these remains appeared to belong to the thirteenth century and fourteenth century, when there seems to have been very significant activity across the area. The earliest remains exposed on the site have been provisionally dated to the late eleventh century. Regular rebuilding of portions of the various walls had been so frequent that often only small fragments of the primary structure could still be identified. (1)
