Full Description

Was lost due to a congestion of shipping, strong tides and her inability to obtain a pilot. The wreck broke in half the day following the stranding and local news papers reported exciting scenes in the rescue of the 200 odd people who were then on board. These included three passengers, one a lady, who had not been taken off on Good Friday, the crew and over 100 boatmen and labourers from Deal employed to save or jettison her cargo. The presence of the female passenger was due to her refusing to leave her dog on board, HM Customs not allowing it to be landed within the 6m quarentine zone. Her cargo consisted of tea, jute, rubber and rice. Nine tugs were engaged in the last attempt to pull her off on Saturday, and when she broke in two there was a rush for the boats. Some 60 Lascar seamen jumped straight from the deck into a lighter alongside. The passengers, crew and boatmen were taken off by the Deal lifeboat. Captain Ellery was the last to leave.
