Full Description
In 1978 two lower palaeolithic handaxes were discovered by grave-diggers at Hawkinge Cemetery. The typology of the axes was from the earlier part of the Acheulian style dating to around 230,000 BC.
One handaxe (its present whereabouts unknown) was reported as of substantial size, maybe c. 25cm long; the other is 11-12cm long, and is a bluntly-pointed sub-cordate, in fresh condition, with brown-stained patination.
