Full Description
Towed out by a patrol boat, the lifeboat men of Deal and Kingsdown making up a mixed crew went out in the Deal lifeboat No 1 in a storm, making a second attempt to save the passengers and crew of the SIBIRIA. On reaching the scene, the patrol boat used its searchlights to illuminate the wreck, which showed that her entire bridge had disappeared, leaving 52 men and women crouching together on what was left of the platform, having been there some 15 hours. The lifeboat was struck by a heavy sea as she reached the wreck, which filled her with water and forced her over on her side but she righted, the thwart to which the anchor line was secured being ripped clean out. The Ramsgate lifeboat suffered similar damage, several crewmen sustaining broken arms and legs. At 9pm the Kingsdown lifeboat, CHARLES HARGRAVE went out and saved all 52 survivors.
