Full Description

At an inquest held on Saturday 24.11 before the East Kent Coroner, Mr R Mowll, evidence of identification on a body washed ashore at Shingle End on 13.11 was given by Mihkel Manheim, and able seaman on TOOGO, that the deceased was the mate of his ship, Anton Manwik. Manheim then stated that the ship had left France at 4pm, got into difficulties near the GULL light vessel and went ashore at 11pm. At high water she floated off but was leaking badly, assumed a heavy list and as she heeled over, all seven crew and the ship's boat were thrown into the water, the boat upside down. The witness, captain, bosun and mate all got onto the bottom of the boat but were washed off, and only the witness and the bosun managed to get back, before being rescued by the Deal lifeboat. Another AB clung to wreckage and was picked up by a steamer. The captain's wife, seasick and ill refused to leave and was last seen clinging to the mast, crying and sobbing as the vessel went down.
