Full Description
Having gone ashore, one man was washed overboard and lost, the remainder lashed themselves into the rigging, where they were exposed to a full gale for 16 hours. The CHARLES DIBDIN lifeboat put out to her rescue with coxswain `Cobbler' Stanton in charge, and rescued three men, the fourth having already died from exposure. The survivors were landed at Deal and taken to hospital. A remarkable aspect of this rescue, for which coxswain Stanton received a bronze medal from the RNLI, was that he was very ill at the time and supposed to be in bed. When his doctor arrived to visit him, he was told that his patient was out at sea in the lifeboat.
