Full Description
`Left Calcutta 12.08 calling at Colombo, Port Sudan, Port Said and Gibraltar, receiving orders to proceed to London. During the night of 06.10 she broke convoy to pick up a pilot and whilst doing so grounded on the Fork Spit of the Goodwin Sands. This was entirly due to the heavy congestion of shipping in the Downs, coupled with the lack of lights due to war restrictions. As soon as it was light tugs arrived and local Deal boats took soundings. At first she seemed in no great danger, the weather being fine. At high tide six tugs attempted to pull her off, but then a SW gale got up and during the night only one tug managed to reach her, making fast to her lee side. During the night the tug managed to move her three cables length towards deeper water, but the following afternoon boatmen noticed a buckle in the ship's plates, working up the port side. Later, the deck commenced to crack and at 7pm she broke in two and it was possible to see right through her hull.'
