'Heugues de Boves, fleeing the Bouvines battle, having kept with him all the rich amounts of money which had been committed to him to pay the English division, on leaving the continent was assaulted by a violent storm and cast away near Sandwich.' (1)(2)

Sources (1) and (2) state the date of loss as JUL-1215. In fact the Battle of Bouvines appears to have taken place on 27-JUL-1214 so that the date of loss in fleeing from the battle must have been shortly afterwards. These sources state the nationality of the vessel as French, but, given the location of the battle, the vessel may equally have been Flemish. The greater part of Flanders now lies in the modern state of Belgium and this has accordingly been indexed in the record for searchability.

1214, July 27: Battle of Bouvines; French victory over King John's Flemish allies destroys his hopes of regaining his empire. (3)

The Battle of Bouvines took place on 27 July 1214, Bouvines at the time being in the County of Flanders. In that battle Philip Augustus of France defeated Otto IV of Germany and Count Ferrand of Flanders, enabling him to seize control of French territories belonging to Otto's kinsman, John of England.

Hugh of Bouves is mentioned as joining the alliance against Philip Augustus, from a quasi-historical literary chronicle of the 13th century, "A Thirteenth-Century Minstrel's Chronicle", a translation by Robert Levine of the "Récits d'un ménestrel de Reims", Mellen Press, Lewiston, 1990.
