Full Description
Carrying an additional cargo of coffee and spice. 'At the height of an easterely gale the vessel, one of several at anchor in the Downs, was seen to be adrift and driving down towards the beach. Several luggers, including the BETSY and the LARK, were launched to assist but their offer was rejected, not by the master but the pilot who anticipated he would lose his fee if the Deal boatmen were allowed to take charge. Shortly before 4pm. she took the ground near Deal Castle and commenced to bump heavily on the bottom. The LARK was laid alongside the wreck but this served only to aggravate the situation since the boat broke adrift, leaving six local men marooned on the brig along with her crew. The snow died away near midnight when the Coastguard were able to get the 2.5 cwt. Mamby apparatus into place and fire a 25lb. ball carrying a line across the wreck, allowing a breeches-buoy to be rigged. Three lost their lives that night, the pilot jumping overboard to drown.'
