Full Description

Having obtained permission from Trinity House to erect a great beacon on the Goodwin Sands to be known as his 'Light For All Nations', Mr. Bush set about installing the first section in September 1841, which required the lower portion to be sunk in the sand to a depth of 64 feet and then filled with 120,000 cubic feet of granite. Unfortunately the towing vessel ran aground and on the first attempt the beacon was not erected. By late September it had settled down to a depth of 25 feet but was struck by the American timber ship the NANCY, which disintegrated with the loss of all its crew, at the same time overturning Mr. Bush's caisson.
