Full Description
See source (3) for a painting by Thomas Longley Mourilyan (1840-1922) called 'A Terrible Shipwreck: 12th February at Kingsdown near Deal'. The painting shows four sailing ships being driven ashore during a storm.
'FOUR VESSELS ASHORE AT WALMER. The gale during the last three days has been very severe on the South Coast. About half-past eight on Saturday evening the schooner RAMINE, Captain Mette, from Habana to Antwerp, with a cargo of rum and sugar, stranded near Walmer Castle. The crew were all saved by means of ropes from the shore, except one youth, who fell out of the sling. During the night the gale increased. About nine on Sunday morning the barque WILLIAM HARPER, from Burriana, was driven on shore near the bathing-rooms, Walmer. All the crew were saved by ropes. Shortly afterwards the brig ANNA LENA, Captain Visser, from Surinam to Amsterdam, stranded and broke up within an hour. The crew of this vessel also were saved; as also were those of the barque EGLANTINE, Captain Holland, from Alexandria to Dover, which went on shore a little to the south of the ANNA LENA. Great credit is due to the boatmen for their skilful exertions in saving the crews of the four vessels, with the exception of the youth who was lost through too hastily adjusting the sling before leaving the ship. All the four ships were lost within a mile of each other. Late on sunday evening the gale was blowing with undiminished force.' (4)
'…the French schooner RACINE, of Marseilles, Mette master, from Havannah for Antwerp, with sugar and rum, was driven on the Walmer Beach, where the boatmen exerted themselves bravely to save the crew, who were in imminent danger. One by one the crew were rescued, amid a scene of great excitement, with the exception of a poor boy, who was so exhausted that he could not retain his hold of the rope, and was swept away by the tide. The schooner has since become a total wreck, and the crew have been lodged at the Dover Sailor’s Home. Early on Sunday morning the bark WILLIAM HARPER (from Buvrionna, waiting in the Downs for orders) went ashore near the same place. The crew were rescued, and the vessel quickly became a total wreck. A Dutch vessel, the ANNA LENA, from Surinam to Amsterdam, was driven on to the beach at Walmer between 10 and 11 o’clock the same morning, and the crew, with the assistance of the boatmen with ropes, had barely time to escape before she went to pieces. Half-an-hour later the bark EGLANTINE, Helland, from Alexandria for Dover, laden with cotton seed for the Oil Mills, also went on shore, but the crew were saved. She also has gone to pieces, not a vestige of her remaining… On Tuesday morning only half of the RACINE could be observed, lying opposite the castle at Walmer; but it was a strange fact that such had been the industry of those on the beach that not a single copper bolt or nail was to be observed in the timber…' (5)
