Two Deal luggers, the REFORM and ENGLANDS GLORY, both went out in answer to distress signals on the Goodwin Sands. On their return, the REFORM was driven by the flood tide into Deal pier, struck and sank, causing eight men to lose their lives. A widows fund was started in the town on 19.01. 1872 and closed on 16.03.1872 having collected 1,501.4s.4d.
