Full Description

Driven ashore by wind conditions SSW. force 10, following collision with the brigantine HEATHER BELL, at the same time as the French brig D'ARTAGNAN. Her captain displayed distress flares which brought out the VAN KOOK lifeboat from N. Deal under coxswain Robert Wilds. Another wreck, which had also displayed distress signals had been on the Brake, but by the time they arrived had gone to pieces and vanished. The lifeboat then went on to save five crew of the French brig, and then went alongside the HEDVIG SOPHIA. Here they dropped anchor to windward and veered down. The captain's wife, although terrified of leaving the ship for a waterlogged lifeboat, was persuaded to leave, the 17 survivors in total being landed at N. Deal. Both coxswain the 2nd. coxswain received silver medals from the RNLI. Year Built: 1851 Owner: L. Glas Master: Stenman.
