Full Description

'One of the worst gales it has ever been our lot to witness, visited Deal on Saturday night, 24th November, when the wind which had been WSW., swung through S. then round through N. to settle at NW. Mr. John Lawrence, toll-collector at the pier head went on the pier at 11pm. with other lookouts and boatmen. At midnight the French topsail schooner GUSTAVE, was seen driving at the pier and they shouted to her to luff. This she did, going N. of the pier to drive ashore opposite Dr. Mason's house, within five or six yards of the esplanade. The sea made a complete breach over her, forcing her crew into the rigging, her timber deck cargo driving ashore making it impossible to approach the wreck for some time. Eventually lines were got across to her and all seven of her company dragged ashore. The ill fated vessel then began to break up, her bottom parting from the deck, so that she split longitudially. Rocket lines had been fired, but none could reach her.' Year Built: 1862 Owner: M. Delalune, Granville Master: Crocq.
