Full Description
[TQ 62363942] Great Bayhall [NAT] [Name shown applied to a building on the south west of the remains of a moat surrounding a ruin.] (1) The manor of Bayhall was part of the ancient possessions of the Colepeper family from temp John [Gives details manorial descent.] (2) The greater part of Bayhall was rebuilt in the 17th c. After 1790, the house began to fall into disrepair and by the early part of the present century was a ruin. There is a large fishpond and a moat. (3) Great Bayhall [NAT] Moat [NR]. (4) Bayhall moat, set into a steep hillside, has been badly mutilated by tipping and the NE arm has been completely destroyed; there is no trace of a SE arm along the lower side of the slope and it is uncertain whether one existed here or not. The SW arm and the pond to the S remain water-filled. Nothing remains of the house but a few overgrown footings. Published survey (OS 25") revised. (5) No change. Survey of 14-2-63 still correct. (6)
