Full Description

'Between 2 and 3am. another vessel, waterlogged, another vessel drifted helplessly towards the pier. This was the schooner QUEEN, which struck the pier stem on and rebounded with such force that men on the pier ran to the shore end, with the exception of John Lawrence, the toll-collector, who shouted to the crew to take to the rigging. Three men succeeded in doing this before she hit the pier again, smashing four of the principle supports and their entablatures. Her masts then went, but not before Lawrence pulled two men and a boy from the rigging onto the pier deck. T. Kinney, boy of 14, his father, and the mate James Callard, were all taken to the Antwerp public house (Mr.and Mrs. Spears) and cared for. The vessel continued through the pier and struck within six or seven feet of the seawall, opposite Peter Marten's house, near the Time Ball Tower. One man was seen on the wreck but disappeared, two others were lost as she went under the pier.' Year Built: 1845 Owner: W. A. Hawke Master: Head.
