' - distress flares from the Brake Sand area showed a large brig stranded there and the BRADFORD lifeboat, under tow of the tug went out to her. Whilst away, the brigantine ALBION, having run foul of a brig in the Downs, parted her anchor cables and in attempting to reach Ramsgate harbour, drove ashore at the back of the East pier on the sand at 1pm. The cries of her crew were heard from the shore, and the Harbour Master, Capt. Jones called for a crew to man the launch which was kept on davits opposite the Dover steps, but the boatmen refused to man her, saying the sea was too rough. One man from the wreck jumped into the ship's boat when it broke adrift and managed to reach the shore. From here he staggered up Harbour Street, where he met a police constable and related his tale. The mortar apparatus was then rigged and two lines fired across the wreck, but the crew refused to leave the rigging. Eventually, the BRADFORD lifeboat arrived and rescued the crew.'
