Full Description
Was riding out a severe gale in the Downs when the cable of her port anchor parted, and she drove down onto NAVY sank on what is called the Cinder Bank, where in 1858 a vessel carrying cinders had gone down. Old and experienced boatmen at the time said there was no depth of water over the area and hence the wreck lay only six feet under. Another vessel later collided with the masts of the wreck, causing her to loose her jibboom. The tug CRUISER brought in three of her crew, the remainder being saved in their own boats. Her loss was considered very strange, since at no time were distress signals shown. At the inquiry into the loss, the BRITISH NAVY as blamed, since she should have dropped her starboard anchor as well as the port, but when bad weather struck her, the crew paid out 90 fathoms on the port side only.
