(TQ 63163711) Tollslye Furnace, Lamberhurst. There is no record of this furnace, although it must have been a considerable one, as there is a good bay and a great quantity of black glassy slag. It may have been included in Bayham (see TQ 64 NW 1) the corresponding forge. Place names: Cinderbanks, Furnace Wood and Field. (1) Tollslye furnace as described by Straker. The site of the furnace-house is indicated by a dense scatter of black earth and slag at the NE end of the bay at TQ 63223712. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2) No change. Survey of 4 3 63 still correct. (3) TQ 632371, Tollslye Furnace, water-powered site, Bay c.120m long upstream height not recorded, downstream c.3m. Breached by stream at the south-west end. Water system. Pond dry. Tail-race may be indicated by line of ponds leading from the north-east end of bay to stream. Working area Probably at north-east end where there is a concentration of glassy slag and charcoal. There are only slight indications of a short life in the early part ofthe 17th century. The name 'Furnace Wood' appears to have replace 'Kingswood', the latter appearing on a Bayham estate map of 1640, copying an original of 1599. In 1634 Alexander Thomas was to deliver 10 tons of sows at 'Tedye' furnace. There are no references in the 1653 or 1664 lists.
