Full Description

Was found on fire 12 miles from the North Hinder light vessel by the Russian steamship CERES, who lowered a boat and rowed across to offer assistance. The captain of the PATRIA stated that he was in dire need of assistance to get his passengers and crew to safety. All the passengers were transferred to the CERES using the liners boats, assisted by the Ramsgate smack ADIEU, after which the ship was abandoned. Still blazing, the PATRIA drifted ashore between Deal and Walmer, was refloated only to sink in the Downs. All attempts to raise the wreck were unsuccessful, despite extensive surveys and work on the Hull by the Swedish salvage steamer BELOS. In January 1902 an Admiralty Notice to Mariners stated, 'the wreck having been so far dispersed that there is now 30 feet of water over the whole wreck at low water springs the wreck marking light vessel will be removed and replaced by a wreck buoy.' The passengers lost all their effects in the fire. Year Built: 1884 Owner: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packet Act.
