TQ 499 641. More than 900 Mesolithic flakes and implements, including part of a probable Thames pick, a tranchet pick and a micro-burin, were recovered from an excavation in 1949 in the garden of A. Hall, Chelsfield, Orpington, by the Orpington H.R. and N.H.S. under the general direction of W.F. Grimes. No neolithic or bone implements were found. Some of the implements are in the possession of Mr. Hall and some in the possession of the society. (1) The property is now owned by a Mr. E. W. Dines who pointed out the site of the excavations at TQ 4979 6410. Nothing further has been found in subsequent minor digging. Most of the finds are in the possession of the Orpington H.R. and N.H.S. pending the opening of a museum at Orpington. (For a more recent Mesolithic discovery nearby see TQ 46 S.E. 5). (2) TQ 499641 (approximate siting only). A number of Mesolithic implemebnts have been found during excavations at Well Hill, Chelsfield including 3 tranchet axe sharpening flakes, c.300 blades, 10 scrapers, 1 graver, 9 microliths, 3 microburins and 12 other implements.
