Full Description

Left London at 5am. under the charge of William Fairbairn, an able and experienced pilot, and in tow of the steam tug NEW UNITY. All went well until she passed through Prince's Channel at about 7pm. the same day when, following the repeated breaking of the tow rope, she drove ashore on Margate Sands and became a total wreck. The Court of Inquiry had some difficulty arriving at a conclusion in this case, deciding that neither the length nor the quality of the towing hawser was sufficient. The master did not appear to have been aware of any defect in the rope, and with a pilot on board and in charge of the vessel the master escaped censure. It was impossible to concieve what explanation the pilot would have given to justify himself in the course that he took and in his absence, the court considered it would be unjust to condemn the master, particularly since he had suggested that they should have anchored when the vessel looked like going ashore.
