Full Description
Treasure case: 2008 T201 - disclaimed, returned to finder Hoard of five coins 3 of Elizabeth I, 1 of Charles I and 1 of the Commonwealth period (each recorded seperately, see linked records for details).Discussion (from Treasure report) These five silver coins were found in close proximity to one another, in an area that produced few other finds, and are all silver coins that would have been in circulation at the same time. The worn conditions of the Elizabeth coins supports the suggestion that they were deposited at the same time as the less worn commonwealth and Chares I coins. The sixpence (coin 1) is less worn but is an unusually large and unclipped coin that therefore may have not been circulated but deliberately saved for some time. It is therefore likely that they were deposited together as all or part of a small coin hoard or lost purse. In terms of their age and number they satisfy the criteria of the Treasure Act. As the coins contain in excess of the 10% precious metal content, this group should be considered as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).
