Full Description

Left London on 20th November at 1pm. carrying a general cargo with an estimated value of 200,000. She was in charge of Mark Martin, a Trinity House pilot and under tow of two tugs to Gravesend. Here she cast off one of the tugs, took the master on board, the tug continuing as far as the Girdler light, where the SPINDRIFT made sail and proceeded to the Downs. At 1.50am. on 21st November soundings were taken in 15 fathoms which shortly after 2am. had reduced to 10 fathoms. The master then brought a light to the attention of the pilot, asking whether or not it was Dungeness. The pilot replied that 'it was a star coming over the land'. At 2.30am. eight fathoms was reported, just before she drove ashore at 11 knots. Attempts were made to refloat her but failed. Half an hour after the ship had struck, the pilot admitted that he saw the red or anchorage light of Dungeness when it was 1.5 miles distant. The Inquiry were uncertain as to the masters' responsibity with a pilot on board. Year Built: 1867 Builder: Connell Owner: Findlay and Co.
