'A PERILOUS POSITION. - NEW ROMNEY, KENT, Dec. 5.

'Yesterday morning at four o'clock the coxswain of the Dungeness lifeboat, belonging to the National Life-boat Institution, observed a vessel ashore, about three miles distant from Dungeness, burning signals of distress. The crew of the life boat assembled as speedily as possible, and at five o'clock the boat had launched. Upon reaching the vessel she proved to be the brigantine THOMAS HUBBUCK, bound from Caen for London, with a cargo of Caen stone. The sea was making a clear breach over her, but the crew had fortunately escaped in their own boat. The wind at the time was blowing a fresh gale from the east and the tide three-quarters flood. Upon leaving the wreck they were compelled to land the boat at No.1 Battery, Dungeness, where the shipwrecked crew had landed about half-past five. Before the coxswain left he gave orders for horses to be sent for and the carriage brought on to bring the boat back. By some misunderstanding, however, the carriage did not arrive till about five o'clock in the evening . . . ' (3)
