An archaeological excavation carried out in 2010 found evidence of medieval and post-medieval domestic and industrial structures fronting onto Water Lane and Fordwich Road. The site had been in use since the 14th century and had gone through various phases of redevelopment. At least four large ovens were found suggesting the site may have been a bakery for some centuries. Along Forwich road the structures were flimsy and basic, perhaps hovels. The area was later redeveloped with brick and stone buildings.
