Full Description

During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust on land adjacent to 1 Matthews Place, Dover, a number of 19th centurty features were uncovered. These included a part of a shallow rectangular brick and chalk lined tank (0.40m deep) filled with modern brick rubble and broken window glass, a fragmentary corner of another wall of identical construction which could have been part of another tank both of which were overlain by a nineteenth-century layer of demolition/levelling material comprising gritty soil and brick rubble. These 19th century features and layers overlay an undisturbed valley soil which was located at a depth of between 0.80 and 1.00m below the original 2017 ground level. (1)
