Full Description
A large mill pond formerly existed within what later became New Gun Wharf, Chatham. It was formed where the Holborne Brook reach the river Medway. It certainly existed by 1633. A mill (TQ 76 NE 416) stood at its northern extent and exploted the rise and fall of the tidal water via a sluice. A map of 1622 suggests the mill pond was in two large sections with a causeway running roughly east-west across the centre. During the 18th century the area was reclaimed to form New Gun Wharf.
