Monument record TQ 76 NE 1329 - Cornwallis Batteries, Fort Amherst
Summary
During the Napoleonic Wars, the defences of Fort Amherst were transformed into a citadel, designed to hold out even if the other defences around the Royal Dockyard were breached. As part of this two batteries were constructed - the Upper and Lower Cornwallis Batteries. These were sited to dominate Chatham town and the bend in the river.
