Monument record TQ 76 NE 1334 - Belvedere Battery, Chatham Lines
Summary
What is now known as the Belvedere Battery was built as part of the second main phase of construction of the Chatham Lines around the time of the American War of Independence (works were taking place in 1786). The guns at Belvedere Battery could fire northwards, which was a key element in converting Amherst redoubt into Fort Amherst - a fort capable of maintaining an independent defence even if an enemy broke into the Royal Dockyard.
