Monument record TQ 76 NE 1346 - Lower Lines, Chatham
Summary
The Lower Lines was a defence line constructed during the Napoleonic Wars to defend the Royal Dockayd and militarized area surrounding it. It supplanted an earlier defence line that ran from Prince Frederick's Bastion back to the Medway north of the dockyard. The Lower Lines enclosed a significantly larger area than the former defences including Brompton Barracks. Like the rest of the Chatham Lines the defences were declared obsolete in 1860.
