Summary
The Duke of Cumberland's Bastion was part of the first main phase of fortification of the Chatham Lines (1755-57). It was the main north-projecting bastion of the defences of the Royal Dockyard and remained a linchpin of the defences until the Lines were declared obsolete in 1860.
