Full Description

The earliest Roman feature recorded was the ditch which was approximately 4ft deep and 7ft wide which is situated parallel to the main defensive wall. This suggests this ditch was not necessarily for defensive purposes and could have simply been a boundary marker for the city. It further implies that the north side of the city was relatively secure with the river providing most of the protection. A lter medievak guard house was built abutting the Roman wall (see TQ 76 NW 729).
During the 2009 excavations, more deposits from the bank were found across most of the trenches. The recovery of a third century radiate (c. AD 238-296) does imply a rough third century date. No vuilding materials were recoverd which may be the result of a later reorganising or strengthening in the later Roman period of the defensive barrier. Other Roman features included dateable posts with deposits from the earthen bank though the function and purpose remains unclear.
