Full Description

An area of open land between Appledore Road and Woodchurch Road to the east of Tenterden that was used for public executions from approximately the 12th century up to 1785, and also has a long history as designated pasture for grazing sheep. It has been identified as an icreasingly rare survival of unimproved grassland.

The location of Gallows Green, alternatively known as Gallows Green Field, is marked on the Tenterden Tithe Map of 1843, which is on display in Tenterden Museum.

In 1822 the Land later known as Limes Land was given as the Marriage Settlement of Elizabeth Hyland Weston to Thomas Manclark. A copy of the Marriage Settlement is in the Kent archive at Maidstone Library. Within this Marriage Settlement is a covenant that the land, which has always been described as pasture, should not be used for any other purpose than grazing.

The area features streams, ponds and hedgerows visible on historic maps of 1769 and 1843 (tithe map). A possible coaxial field system is visible on LiDAR.

Part of Limes Land was used by the military in WWII and the concrete remains of their structures can be seen near the junction of Woodchurch Road with Appledore Road.
