Full Description

A test pit evaluation was carried out to the south east near Willow Brook Farm in 2020. The test pits were cut directly into a 3m high bank earthwork which was identified at the site in orer to identify any associated archaeological material which could date the feature. Layers forming the earthwork comprised a brownish-yellow clay layer forming the majority of the bank, overlain by a layer of frey0sh-yellow clay, overlain by topsoil. Further construction layers may have existed beneath these, however, these were not reached during the excavation.
This excavation identified a possible prehistoric feature, two fragments of Belgic ‘Grog-tempered’ ware late Iron Age to early Roman pottery, and burnt flint. The artefacts were recovered from a test pit dug into the terminus of the earthwork. The post-excavation assessment concluded that the earthwork visible at the site was likely to have been constructed during the prehistoric period, however, due to a lack of associated finds, the feature could only be broadly dated to between 1000 BC and 43 AD.
