Full Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2017 found several inhumation burials associated with the former use of the land as St Mary's church and churchyard. The burials were c. 0.7 m below ground level and much distrubed and inarticulated. They were found in trenches 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. .In the central part of the site (trenches 6 and 11) more bone was found but somewhat shallower (0.58 m deep). In trenches 7, 8 and 9 fragments of bone were also seen but shallower still (0.18 m to 0.31 m). The shallowness of the discoveries suggested that the site has been significantly truncated and in the eastern part the cellars of the former pub were discovered suggesting that burials in this area would have been much disturbed.

The bones were accompanied by finds of brick, tile, glass, post-medieval and later pottery but nothing older. (1)
