Full Description

TQ 493631 (Site 1). Numerous Mesolithic flakes found on the surface over an area of some 20 yds square. Chelsfield Lane cuts through the centre of the site and worked flints are exposed in the top 3 ft of the bank or fallen in the roadway below. TQ 495631 (Site 2). Erosion on an overgrown path in Hollows Wood revealed a Mesolithic industry similar to Site 1. However much of the evidence is under a layer of humus and fallen leaves. (1) These two sites, centred at TQ 49286313 and TQ 49486307, occupy an elevated position on sand at about 500 ft O.D.: The finds, which include microliths, are in the possession of Mr Edmonds, who indicated the sites of his discoveries. (For a similar site nearby excavated byW.F. Grimes in 1949 see TQ 46 SE 1) (2-4)
