Building record TQ 97 SW 1210 - Former guard house, hospital and barracks at Fort Townshend, Sheerness

Summary

A building near Sheerness Lines variously identified as a Guard House (shown on a plan of ‘Fort Townshend’ dating from 1796), a military hospital, and subsequently shown as a barracks (‘married quarters’), before conversion to a stores and workshops. Historic mapping indicates that the building survived in this form until at least 1938, but by 1940 aerial imagery of the site indicates that the Guard House has been demolished and replaced in the same location by an engine shed of similar dimensions in plan.
