Full Description

The former shelter is brick built, and of a single storey, and is rectangular in plan, measuring approximately 7.3m in length bym5.0m in width. The south-east, south-west (behind a later lean-to) and north-east elevations of the building are built primarily of red brick laid in a reasonably regular Flemish bond, in a white lime mortar. The bricks are unfrogged and relatively thin, measuring on average 2¼ x 8½ x 4” in size. Small panels of knapped and unknapped field flints are present in the south and west elevations. Two shallow buttresses are present in the rear, south-east wall. A
segmental arch can be seen, internally, in the north-east wall of the building, approximately 1m
above floor level, but this is perhaps a later feature. An opening, now blocked, must have been
present here, beneath the arch. The original roofwas unfortunately lost. The features of the building suggest it was built during the early part of the eighteenth century. Its location along one side of a farmyard implies agricultural use. Its form and position suggest it was a shelter, one that was perhaps used to store equipment and materials rather than animals or produce. The original roof was presumably steeply pitched and hipped to the north-east and south-west, and may have been thatched. (1)
