Full Description

The archaeological watching brief revealed a cluster of four undated postholes, no datable artefacts were recovered from any of these features. Three of the postholes however were in a linear arrangement but once again, the lack of any datable artefactual or environmental evidence makes furher interpretation impossible.

Several unstratified finds, including 13-14th century pottery sherds, post-medieval pottery sherds, mixed brick and tile fragments from the Roman period through to the post-medieval periods and single undiagnostic flint nodule were recovered from the topsoil during the ground reduction.

A small assemblage of seven sherds of post-Roman pottery were recovered with two periods being represented. Three sherds consisted of quite heavily abraded oxidised Tyler Hill sandy ware, another two were body sherds, including a green glazed example from a jug, while the third was from a jug strap handle with line of central stabbing and thumbed edges and can be dated between c.1225-1350, although a later 13th century date is most likely. Remaining sherds are from post-medieval redwares and include quite finely made body sherds and single base, a date between c.1675 and 1800 is probable.

Thrity fragments of Roman to post-Medieval ceramic building mateials were also recovered, all fragments were highly abraded. (1)
