During an archaeological watching brief undertaken on two pits excavated on the southern side of Emmaus Community's Workshop, in the western corner of Archcliffe Fort, a yellow stock brick lined feature was uncovered. The feature was positioned immediately outside, and set at a slight angle to the workshop building. The top of the structure lay at a depth of about 0.15m and it was 0.6m deep. The internal face of the brick lining had been rendered and the floor was concrete. Its full extent was not revealed.

Reference to the 1884 map of the fort indicates that this feature probably formed the end of a flight of steps giving access to a passage which led to the western sally port. Access to these steps had clearly been blocked by the south west wall of the workshop, indicating that the passage had gone out of use by the time this wall was built. The most likley time for the abandonment of the passage would be after the seaward side of the fort had been destroyed by the railway. (summerised from report) (1)
