Vessel foundered after being upset in wind conditions N force 10. (1)

This vessel was got under weigh after riding very heavily at anchor, and an attempt was made to get her before the wind; but she would not answer her helm and became quite unamanageable. When about three-quarters of a mile off the land, she turned over on her side and went down, taking the two hands with her. The loss of the vessel was attributed to stress of weather, but it was thought that the master should have run up the River Swale instead of anchoring out in the open. (2)

`CHARLES barge of Faversham, laden with Sand, foundered off Leysdown Coastguard station at 2pm on the 22nd inst.; crew (two men) drowned. Vessel dries at low water. (Leysdown by Tel. dated Sheerness, March 23rd)' (3)
