Full Description

The Archaeological Evaluation and Assessment of the Land consisted of six trenches with only one archaeological feature, a narrow, shallow linear found in trench five.
The report itself includes historical and archaeological background information on the area, such as mention of the Barham Downs located above the village that is dotted with Bronze Age barrows which indicates an early transportation link to the coast.

Th results included finds of rare, moderately sorted small to medium flints and gravels that could have been remnant material left over from the extraction of gravels or brickearth from the quarry. Trench five contained a shallow linear aligned northwest/southeast that was filled by grey clay silt with common medium pieces of slag and rare carbon flecks, rare small daub pieces and rare gravel and small angular flint. From this context there was no pottery or other cultural material found meaning a date could not be assigned to this feature.

In trenches three and four rare peg tile fragments were found alongside post-medieval roof tile and brick fragments were found in trench one. Besides the feature found in trench five only those residual post-medieval finds were discovered on site. (1)
